Nikon AW100 vs Panasonic TS20 – Which one is better?

Nikon AW100 vs Panasonic TS20

The Nikon AW100 and Panasonic TS20 are two of the best-selling waterproof digital cameras on Amazon with the TS20 capturing the number one position. They are most compatible in the areas of start-up speed, megapixels, type of media storage, power source and both are fairly close when it comes to performance as rated by consumers. The choice of which model is really dependent on the needs of the buyer, cost, features and image and video quality.

Why is the Panasonic TS20 a best-seller? It comes down to cost and the specs. This model retails for under $200.00 and has enough features to set it apart from the more expensive models. It maintains an economical advantage while also providing the user with excellent performance.

One of the most exciting finds about this camera is that it can start up and begin picture taking in 2 seconds while shooting one frame per second in continuous drive mode with a short 0.1 second shutter lag. The TS20 features include a CCD sensor, 16MP, 4x optical zoom, 2.7 LCD screen, and 720P HD video recording in the MP4 format, 70MB of internal memory, no GPS, and is waterproof to 16 feet. Consumers rating this camera talked about durability, ease of use, good images and video whether on land or in water.

Although the Nikon Coolpix is a bit more expensive, it manages to hold its own because of the features and performance. It is the first waterproof camera from Nikon and retails for under $300.00. As far as price goes, the Coolpix lands between the low and high end performers. In other words, it lands right in the middle, but its features are notable and impressive.

As far as speed goes, the AW100 can start-up and take a picture in 1.4 seconds making you wait just a short 0.8 seconds while responding with a 0.1 second shutter lag. The Coolpix AW100 features include:  a CMOS sensor, 16MP, 5x optical zoom, 3.0 LCD screen, and 720P and 1080P HD video recording in QuickTime format, 83MB of internal memory, GPS, and waterproof to 33 feet. Consumers rating this camera talked about it being: durable, easy to use, compact, audio, GPS, Action Tap, good quality images and video no matter if on land or in water.

Both models are similar in a few areas, but the differences come down to minor specs that affect the quality of photographs. The cameras have the same megapixels, they are dustproof, freezeproof down to 14°F and shockproof from a drop of 5 feet. Both have in-camera panoramas, wide-angle lens, and dedicated record button for HD video recording.

These two cameras are considered compact point and shoots, but the AW100 is a tad bit larger and heavier (2.6 x 4.4 x 0.9 inches, 6.3 ounces) than the TS20 (2.3 x 4 x 0.8 inches, 5 ounces). The Nikon Coolpix provides more in terms of image quality, video recording and features that enhance the picture taking experience.

For example, it not only records in 720P, but also 1080P HD, it has a 3 inch 460K dot LCD display screen resolution which makes framing and reviewing images easy in a variety of lighting conditions. The TS20 has a 2.7 inch 230K dot LCD display.

The Panasonic has a CCD sensor that is used in cameras that focus on high-quality images with lots of pixels and excellent light sensitivity while the AW100 has the less expensive CMOS sensor which traditionally has suffered from lower quality, resolution, and sensitivity.

There is a big difference in the ISO measures (indicates the sensitivity of the image sensor) of the two cameras. The lower the ISO number the less sensitive the camera is to light and the finer the grain which equates to noise in the picture. The Panasonic has an ISO measurement of 1600 while the Nikon has an ISO measurement of 3200.

The AW100 has an in-camera GPS that automatically adds geographic coordinates to photos. Unfortunately, the Panasonic TS20 does not have GPS. The AW100 also has a feature called Action Tap which works when the user lightly taps the action button to scroll through options on the camera.

This makes it possible to adjust settings on the fly, which can be helpful if you’re wearing gloves or need to operate the camera with one hand. The Panasonic TS20 does not have a feature for gloved or one-hand operation.

Battery life is longer on the TS20 which allows 260 photographs versus 250 for the AW100. The TS20 also can take 3D images that can be viewed on 3D televisions while the AW100 does not have this feature.

Both of these models have appeal among photography enthusiasts and consumers. However, when you boil down to the type of features you want and how you plan to use the camera each model has its positives and negatives. Most consumers purchase the Panasonic Lumix DMC-TS20 because it is economical, compact, has good quality images and video, is easy to use and camera performance is competitive with other popular expensive, and feature-filled models.

Although it doesn’t have a GPS, this has not discouraged consumers. This camera is great for capturing memories on vacation at the beach, pool, body surfing, or snorkeling.  Most consumers consider it a good buy because it is a dependable performer; the image and video quality met their expectations, easy to use, and economical.

The Nikon Coolpix AW100 is described as robust because of its features, size, and being a member of the tough camera models. Consumers that chose this model usually possessed one of the larger bulky SLR models and wanted a compact that is waterproof; withstand being roughly handled and had the ability to take great pictures and video.

Because this model has a waterproof depth of 33 feet, users take this camera with them when fishing, scuba diving, snorkeling, rafting, and kayaking.  Most consumers choosing this model states that image and video quality is quite good, higher resolution than most cameras, macro mode, reliable when in focus, details are sharp and colors are accurate, durable, and easy to use.
